Research firm points to application composition as the future
Due to the popularity of composability and integration platforms, PaaS services have emerged strongly. “As organizations want to become more agile, many companies are acquiring knowledge for software development and analytics applications in addition to investing in a centralized application portfolio,” Gartner® writes in a press announcement of its Hype Cycle for Cloud Platform Services™. “The growing demand from the business to become self-sufficient has led to the rapid growth and maturity of low-code platforms.” Cloud services have emerged and expanded so quickly that the classic three-format of infrastructure, platform and software (IaaS, PaaS and SaaS) is no longer sufficient. Numerous suppliers have come up with new scalable, shared services that facilitate software building blocks entirely from the cloud. For example, there are now low-code platforms that allow you to assemble new business software from a broad collection of API-driven processes to serve a new target group or simplify work processes.

Further development of low-code
The demand for this type of service is on the rise, because in this case, composable platforms at first glance offer the same added value that has made them break into the market. “The market in composability has broken through as a standard, reaching more than 50% of larger customer organizations worldwide,” Gartner analysts estimate. “Over the years, this market will total sales of 7.4 billion dollars, an increase of 28.4% year over year.” Modeling has reduced software development costs and greatly reduced lead times. So the next steps are now coming. “Tooling for composable software development continues to evolve, leading to further cost reductions for complex and heavy business applications,” according to analysts in the Hype Cycle Cloud Platform Services 2022™ Report. “This reduction in the costs and effort to build applications already makes it possible for organizations to create their own CRM and ERP systems without the need to use expensive external services.”
Composable software suppliers are continuing to develop their platforms to meet the needs of their customers. The paradigm that reduces the complexity of software development with the help of, among other things, a graphical interface includes more and more functionality of providing integration, unlocking AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) services and extensive automation of business processes with workflow optimizations. “CIOs are looking for maximum ROI on their existing SaaS investments and want to reuse these services and APIs for new digital business applications,” notes Gartner® in the report. “This means putting together new software based on SaaS services that they already use via their API facilities, if possible via a composition platform from the SaaS provider.”
Deliver faster
Customer organizations love to reuse existing functionality, not only to save costs and prevent risky investments, as mentioned, but especially because this reuse makes it possible to quickly deliver new software. Organizations are currently reorienting their market positions in large numbers, so the sooner they can access new software, the happier they are. “Companies want to reuse before they buy and then build as a last resort because of the costs, risks, and skills required for software development. Reuse and speed of delivery - especially by developers with a business background - are made possible by composability, a quality that is increasingly focused in certain application platforms,” note the Gartner® analysts.
Being able to deliver new software quickly makes companies agile. This is why many suppliers are making their platforms even more suitable for composability, or composing business software from a combination of new and existing functionalities.
The benefits of application composition
With the arrival of application composition platforms, the above customer needs will be further met in the coming years. Gartner® notes that application composition is on the rise:
“An application composition platform (ACP) is a software development platform that offers the following support:
- a store filled with composable, packaged software components;
- the creation and inclusion in this store of newly built components by developing and importing existing facilities;
- democratized software development and use of applications, partly composed of the components in the store;
- governance of the life cycle of the components included in the store and the applications that are assembled with them.”
One of Gartner's recommendations to user organizations is to “prioritize the selection of these types of new application platforms that make it possible to develop an expandable catalog of relevant and useful business functionalities and connectors to stimulate composability. In particular, consider suppliers with a broad approach to application composition that use their own and other building blocks when putting together business software to limit the consequences of a “vendor lock in”.

Novulo has developed application composition in its own platform by facilitating orchestration, flexibility, integration and authenticity in software development. The video below shows what benefits an IT manager gets when a composable platform is full of components that are ready to assemble an ERP application.
